Local surfing legend Pauline Menczer from Bondi Beach has told her remarkable story in a new book, “Surf Like a Woman,” detailing how she overcame sexism, homophobia, and rheumatoid arthritis to become World Surfing Champion.
Menczer remains the only Bondi surfer to win a World Title, achieved in 1993. Despite this significant achievement, she never received any prize money, as all funds went to the men’s champion.
A mural of Menczer now adorns Bondi Beach’s promenade, with a bronze statue set to follow soon, honouring her legacy.
Challenges of the 80s and 90s Surf Culture
In the 80s and 90s, surf culture was particularly toxic for women. Female surfers faced numerous obstacles, including lack of sponsorship, minimal pay, and constant underestimation.
Menczer was one of the pioneers who broke through these barriers, paving the way for future generations of women in surfing. Despite her success, she and her fellow female surfers had to scrape by on minimal income, often barely breaking even after covering travel, equipment, and medical expenses.
“Surf Like a Woman” chronicles the highs and lows of her journey, including her battle with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis and the need to hide her same-sex relationship for fear of discrimination in competitions. Her resilience and determination are highlighted throughout her memoir, showing how she navigated the male-dominated sport.
The book also touches on the achievements of contemporary female surfers, such as Australian Molly Picklum, who recently made history with a perfect score at Hawaii’s Pipe Pro. Picklum has admired trailblazers like Menczer, who inspired her to push the limits.
Continued Advocacy
After her professional surfing career, Menczer continues to fight against sexism and misogyny in the sport. She also raises awareness for sportswomen with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. She recently appeared in the documentary “Girls Can’t Surf,” alongside other surfing legends, challenging the male-dominated surfing culture.
“Surf Like a Woman” is not just a memoir but a celebration of the resilience, strength, and power of women in sport. The story of Pauline Menczer is a shining example of courage and determination required to break down barriers and achieve greatness in the face of adversity.
