From Bondi Beach to Barcelona, the dream European trip of Caroline Breure ended in tragedy when a speeding police car struck her in Spain, leading to a miraculous four-month fight for life in a Spanish hospital.

The Accident and Immediate Aftermath

Caroline, a 38-year-old from Bondi Beach, had been enjoying a three-week European vacation with her then-boyfriend when disaster struck on the 9th of September 2019.

A pedestrian light turned green, and Caroline stepped onto a Barcelona crossing. Within moments, a speeding police car collided with her, propelling her 13 metres through the air and causing catastrophic injuries. Caroline retained no memories from Barcelona, describing her recollections of the trip as merely a series of blurred images and feelings.

Hospital Ordeal: A Fight for Survival

Caroline’s injuries were severe; her skull was crushed and her brain was severely damaged, leaving her in a coma. Doctors initially gave her a mere five per cent chance of survival, cautioning that she might remain in a permanent vegetative state.

Caroline’s mother, undeterred by the dire predictions, flew from Brazil to support her daughter, firmly believing in her recovery and often asserting that the doctors underestimated Caroline’s resilience.

A Slow Road to Recovery

Against all odds, Caroline awakened from the coma after four months. She then faced a daunting path ahead, relearning basic functions like walking and talking.

Over time, Caroline underwent numerous surgeries to repair her skull and address the neurological damage. The full reality of her situation only dawned on her on the first anniversary of the accident, marking a significant turning point in her recovery.

Two years after the accident, Caroline returned to Europe to retrace her steps, a journey that included visiting the Barcelona hospital room where she had battled for survival. This experience was part of her extensive recovery process, during which she also launched a new venture, an ethical shoe company named No Saints.

Caroline’s daily life reflects her ongoing struggle and determination. She continually pushes herself to face each new day with courage.
